The strawberry is the first berry to ripen. Its sweetness was considered good medicine for the heart by many indigenous peoples in the US and Canada. Traditionally, Ojibwe communities celebrated the Strawberry Moon cycle with annual feasts welcoming everyone home, regardless of any previous disputes; old grudges from the past year were forgiven.

Here at the longest days of the year, let us step fully into the light, let go of judgment and reconcile our differences with friends and family … and especially within our own heart. Besides forgiveness, it is also part of “strawberry medicine” to savor the small, sweet things that make life more enjoyable.
